Tips for Preparing for Your Engagement Session

If you want your pictures to really showcase your love story, we have some tips for preparing for your perfect engagement session.  Here are a few questions to think about when deciding what to wear, and the theme/style you’d like to include as well.

• What kinds of activities do the two of you like to do together?

Sure, there are couple who like hiking, traveling, and other huge activities, but what other kinds of activities do you enjoy doing together as well? This can really help us create a style of shoot that is sentimental and memorable for you guys. Maybe you like bike riding together, or racing RC cars, or playing video games? Maybe you are total foodies, or you like to push each other on the swings at the park? Maybe you love hanging at coffee shops or playing laser tag together? Lets think of something that is a little outside the box that would bring out the fun and playful side of the two of you.

• What are your common interests?

By informing us of your interests, we can add a more personal touch to your photos. Are you both fans of the same sports team? Did you attend the same college?  Are the two of you really into video games or comic books? Do you work in the same profession?  Do you have an obsession with Target or Starbucks?  Are you into the same music?

 

• Where did the two of you first meet?

If you want to add some sentimental value to your session, tell me the story of how you guys first met.  We might even be able to stop by that location, if it was a local place, and create that scene again (how fun would that be)?  We are a wedding photography based out of Southern California, so local locations would be Temecula, Orange County or San Diego.

 

• Do you have ‘a spot’?

You know that place in the movies, where the guy takes the girl to the pullout area on the top of a cliff to “look at the stars”? Well, do you have a location like that? I mean modern day “spots” could be a hiking trail you love, a favorite beach, a movie theater you frequent.  Maybe your favorite date night spot? Where did you have your first kiss? What is your favorite place to hang out? Tell us your favorite go-to locations, I will be sure to check them out to see if these locations could work for your engagement shoot (some factors will come into play, but we love incorporating locations like this into part of your sessions).

• Clothing: What is your style?

We have a deeper article on what to wear, but this is a huge topic to consider when planning for the perfect engagement session. Do you prefer rimmed hats, and ripped jeans? Lacey tops? Are you guys a little fancier and want to get decked out in a gown and a suit? Your style doesn’t necessarily have to match the location (sometimes the dramatic differences make for epic engagement photos: think, formal wear in the middle of a green forest-like area)! Let’s talk about this more! Oh, and here’s a hint – no matchy matchy!

• Where/how did he propose?

We don’t necessarily need to recreate this event, but it helps us to understand the intimate memorable moment that started this whole wedding planning journey for you guys. This is the moment you decided to spend the rest of your lives together. This is important, especially if we were not able to capture this moment as it was actually happening. We want you to be able to share your proposal story with photos to go along with it, so this can easily become a little topic or theme to your engagement photos (without being cheesy)!

• Do you have any pets together?

Let’s face it, fur babies are our BABIES! These little cuties make the perfect addition to your engagement session, as long as the location allows it. We welcome your pets in your engagement session, lets talk about this as we are preparing for your engagement session.
